CFD-Example 5: Flow around a sphere in the laminar and fully turbulent flow region

This example shows the flow around a sphere whilst increasing the velocity in the blower stream. Through this, the Reynolds-number varies in a wide range. A very good agreement with the drag-force (Fig. 2) is obtained until the flow region changes: In the Newton region unsteady vortices appear. This region of Reynolds-Number can not be modelled with a steady state axis symmetric model (see cylinder), because the flow is non-symmetrical and transient. In the fully turbulent flow region the flow becomes quasi-static again and a good agreement with the experimental data is obtained.
